What Is a
DIY Murder Mystery?

A DIY murder mystery is a party game where the host runs a custom whodunit for their own guests instead of buying a pre-written boxed kit. Each guest plays an assigned character with secrets, motives, and evidence. Players investigate the fictional murder through conversation and revealed clues, then vote on the culprit.

How does a DIY murder mystery work?

A DIY murder mystery runs in three acts over two to three hours. Act one introduces characters and the crime. Act two is open investigation, where guests question each other, trade information, and examine evidence. Act three ends with accusations and a host-led reveal explaining who killed the victim and why.

[Narrative expansion — describe what each act feels like from the host's perspective. Mention costumes, lighting, pacing. Include one real example if you can.]

How is a DIY murder mystery different from a boxed kit?

A boxed kit ships identical characters and plots to every buyer, so a Victorian earl shows up at every dinner party regardless of who is playing. A DIY murder mystery is generated for a specific guest list, theme, and set of inside jokes. Characters reference real relationships, which makes accusations land harder and guests stay more engaged.

[Narrative expansion — honest comparison. Where boxed kits still win, where DIY dominates. Be specific — don't just bash competitors.]

How many people do you need?

DIY murder mysteries work best with 8 to 20 guests. Smaller groups make it easier to track every character, while larger groups create more overlapping secrets and investigation threads. Most kits include optional characters so the host can scale the cast up or down if guests cancel or extras arrive.

This is up to you! We have trouble organizing events over 20 people. At that point, in our experience, the murder becomes unsolvable, and not every player can realistically be involved or have a chance to solve it. ~20 people seems to be where the "playable" aspect of these caps out. Plus, do you really want to make food for more than 20 people?

Who is a DIY murder mystery for?

DIY murder mysteries are popular for birthday dinners, bachelorette parties, corporate team-building events, holiday parties, and classroom or staff celebrations. Groups who already know each other get the most out of a custom kit, because the mystery can weave in real inside jokes, professional roles, or long-running group dynamics.

Counter-point: who is a DIY murder mystery NOT for? We kid. This is for somebody who wants to host a very unique event, without having to spend hours writing a story. That's what we did originally. Dozens of hours writing each story. Then, we figured out what makes these work. And we got with some engineers to build a system that creates a flexible, yet standard structure. Now, you can host a party that includes your friends and favorite characters IN THE STORY, without having to do the hard part. You're welcome!

Common Questions

Is a DIY murder mystery the same as a LARP or roleplaying game?

A DIY murder mystery is a one-night party game with a defined ending, not an ongoing roleplaying campaign. Guests play assigned characters for two to three hours, investigate a single fictional crime, and vote on a culprit. There are no stats, dice, or rule systems like a LARP or tabletop RPG — just conversation, evidence, and deduction.

Can you play a DIY murder mystery online or remotely?

DIY murder mysteries are designed as in-person party games because the format relies on side conversations, reading body language, and physically handling evidence. Playing over video call is possible but loses much of what makes the game work. Hybrid setups with a few remote guests tend to work better than fully virtual parties.

Do you need a host to play a DIY murder mystery?

A DIY murder mystery needs one host who runs the game rather than playing to solve it. The host distributes evidence between acts, keeps pacing on track, and reveals the solution at the end. The host can still play a minor character, but someone has to hold the host's guide and know the full solution in advance.

What comes in a DIY murder mystery kit?

A DIY murder mystery kit includes character cards with public personas, secret objective cards with private motives, evidence documents (letters, telegrams, newspaper clippings, ledgers), a host's guide with the full solution and pacing instructions, and redistribution cards for handling absent guests. Everything prints from a standard home printer.
