Ready to create your own unforgettable mystery party?

Create Your Mystery

We had 19 people in character at the club and by the end of the night three separate members of the wait staff asked what we were doing because they wanted to play. The host guide was the thing that sold me on it honestly. I was not prepared to run something that big and the guide broke it down into rounds so I always knew what was next.

Our group chat had been arguing over the theme for like three weeks before I just bought this and said we're doing it. Shut everyone up immediately. Second friendsgiving and it's the one people are still texting about. The personalization is what makes it, my friends saw characters that felt like them without being too on-the-nose.

I bought this the day before, which is on me, and it was ready faster than I expected. The mystery itself was fun and the characters clicked for the group. Knocking one star because the "cabin" element didn't come through as strongly as I hoped. Most of the setting read as generic indoors. Could be my fault for not pushing it more in the description. Everyone still had a great time, just wanted to flag.

A few of us from camp have been getting together every couple years and honestly we were running out of things to do that wasn't just drinking and looking at old photos. This gave us a reason to be stupid again. The 90s references were spot on without being forced. Guide was easy to follow, I read it once the morning of and didn't need to look again.

I asked for a semi-roast and boy did it roast. My principal was the "victim" and he laughed the whole way through. The characters were clearly based on what I'd written and our science teacher got assigned a role that was basically her real personality turned up to 11. End of year party unlocked.

We were nervous about this because our family ranges from 14 to 81, but it worked. My mother in law, who does not play games, was the first one to accuse someone. The characters felt specific without being inside-jokey to the point that the kids were lost. Worth every dollar for what it did for the room.

My mom kept saying "this is so ME" which is what you want from a birthday surprise. The vineyard setting made it into the story and the characters were all wine-adjacent in different ways (sommelier, vineyard heir, tasting room employee with a grudge). She's already asking when we're doing another one.

"Actually in the tone we asked for"

I was doubtful about the "tone" input doing anything but it clearly read what I wrote. The mystery felt like the kind of thriller we'd been reading. One of our members who writes fiction said the plotting was tighter than a lot of what gets published. That is either a compliment or an indictment of publishing, I'm not sure. Either way, great night.

Was expecting something generic and got something genuinely clever. The small-town diner setting had all these little details (regulars, rival jukebox owners, a missing recipe) that made the whole thing cohere. My wife said this was the most fun we've hosted anyone for in probably a year.

Wasn't sure what a murder mystery was going to do at a bachelor party but it actually became the whole anchor of the weekend. The cowboys-and-outlaws angle meant everyone leaned into the bits. One note, I wish there had been a little more suggested around costumes, we had to figure that out ourselves and some guys showed up in Halloween-store chaps. Worth it regardless, groom had a blast.

"saved the bachelorette"

Okay so we had a whole bar crawl planned and it got rained out on Saturday. I bought this at like 11am, had it printed at a FedEx by 2, and we played it in the Airbnb that night. The bride cried laughing. The country music honky tonk theme came through in all the characters and my maid-of-honor speech basically wrote itself around the "evidence." Life saver.

Dad was a homicide detective for 35 years and has solved every mystery party we've ever thrown within about 20 minutes, so the bar was high. He got about halfway through before he figured it out this time, which is a win. He said the red herrings were "genuinely annoying" which from him is praise. Four stars because one of the character bios had a name mismatch in one paragraph, small thing but he noticed immediately (because of course he did).

Really atmospheric. The snowstorm-trapped-in-a-B&B setup was exactly what I pitched and the mystery paid it off well. I wanted a little more on the "haunted" side, though. The spooky elements were there but softer than I was hoping, more cozy mystery than horror. Maybe that's a me problem for not being specific enough in the form. Guests loved it, I'd just go in knowing it's not going to be actually scary.

Got this for a dinner party where I wanted atmosphere but not a ton of setup. It delivered. The evidence documents looked like they'd been pulled from an estate sale and my friends fought over who got to keep them after. Will buy again.

"close to perfect"

The pretentious collector characters were SO good, multiple friends said "wait this is literally Marcus" about a specific person in our group. The missing painting as the central mystery worked well and the reveal landed. Four stars only because the host guide assumed a little more prep time than I had. I would recommend giving yourself the full suggested time to read through it because I tried to skim and had to pause twice to look things up mid-game. My own fault, but worth mentioning to other hosts.

"okay this exceeded expectations"

i host A LOT and it is getting genuinely hard to come up with new ideas that actually get people off their phones. this did it. threw it for my best friend's 30th and everyone was locked in from minute one. the speakeasy theme was so good, the characters had real backstories that made sense together, and multiple girls were in full costume by accusation time. i didn't have to babysit the vibe at any point which almost never happens.

Solid pick for a work event. The corporate satire was on target and nobody was uncomfortable, which was my worry. Docking a star because the character PDFs printed with some weird margin cutoffs on our office printer, had to re-print two of them. Easy to fix but annoying in the moment. Would still recommend, just maybe check your printer settings first.
